Parenting

This program is designed to provide skills, techniques and support to clients whose children have witnessed domestic violence or drug/alcohol abuse or have been the victim of child abuse.

Parenting Sessions:

  1. Effects of violence on children
    The way children perceive violence is very different from adults. Learn how to help children, who have been exposed to violence, process their experiences. Learn prevention and protective skills for your children
  2. Dealing with anger (yours and theirs)
    Learn to recognize how we deal with anger and develop constructive ways to express those feelings. Help children learn effective ways of expressing their anger and undo any learned negative patterns.
  3. Ages and Stages
    Gain an understanding of the stages in a child’s development. Included are the issues of separation and independence in order to deal with children in more positive ways
  4. Discipline vs. Abuse
    Look at discipline as a teaching opportunity instead of inflicting punishment. The goal of “limit setting” is to teach responsibility for self and behavior. Learn problem solving and negotiating techniques.
  5. Listening Skills
    We discuss the importance of taking the time to listen to children and reflect back to them what they have expressed. Effective listening skills will result in improved communication for your children and yourself, both for today and the future.
  6. Effective Communication
    Learn communication skills to enhance relationships and to avoid conflict with your children
  7. Effects of Violence
    The discipline methods that we were exposed to as children may have lasting effects. We will explore childhood experiences and discuss how it effects our present parenting style.
  8. Sex and Sex Education
    Explores comfort with speaking with children regarding sex. Use of appropriate terms and proper boundaries within our homes.
  9. Parenting Teens
    Today’s teens present a myriad of parenting complications. The focus of this class is for parents to better understand their teens and today’s society.
  10. Proactive and Reactive Parenting
    Identify your parenting style and evaluate which new techniques will help you improve your rapport with your children.
  11. Family Power Struggles and Control Issues
    All families have their unique struggles. This class will explore the ways to side step power struggles and how to choose the important issues without confrontation or escalation.
  12. Effects of Drugs and Alcohol Use on Children
    The effects of having a parent that abuses substances is far reaching. We will examine the impact of drugs and alcohol on our children. We will also explore the lifestyle patterns of adult children of alcoholics.

Cognitive Awareness Therapy

Minimum of 12 Sessions
1½ hour sessions
Sessions held weekly
$25 per session*

This treatment will address thought disorders and chronic self-defeating behaviors. It will help clients move forward toward a positive and pro-active lifestyle.

Individual Counseling

1 hour sessions
$45 per session

These services are available for clients presenting issues that may be more appropriately addressed in a private setting.

Family Counseling

1 hour sessions
$75 per session

These sessions are available to all clients except those participating in domestic violence groups. Fees are based on a sliding scale.


*Secondary group sessions are discounted to $5 per session when attended at the same time as primary treatment
